Captaintreacherous - Stand Tall !
2nd April 2024

BITTERSWEET's stunning performance in the GOLD TIARA last Saturday evening (30/03/24), made it three on the trot for sire CAPTAINTREACHEROUS ... following on from Jewel Melody's win in 2022, and Lux Aeterna in 2023.
Never before have we seen a sire dominate this 2-year-old Fillies Classic in such a manner!
Whilst we have had back-to-back siring victories several times in the 2-year-old Colts & Geldings GOLD CROWN - namely:
BUTLER BG in 1991/1992 (Just A Peek / Sportsmaster); JET LAAG in 2006/2007 (Lombo Pocket Watch / Yrubla); ART MAJOR in 2010/2011 (Beetson / Soho Valencia); and BETTORS DELIGHT in 2019/2020 (Jilliby Nitro / Tasty Delight)
... it has never occurred previously in the TIARA, let alone three times in a row!
And you can add to this, the fact that in 2023 CAPTAINTREACHEROUS claimed the GOLD CROWN - GOLD TIARA 'double' with Chart Topper and Lux Aeterna! This is a feat that has only occurred twice previously - namely with:
TROUBLEMAKER in 1998 (Flubber and Terricherry); and BETTORS DELIGHT in 2019 (Jilliby Nitro and Michelle Lee Mac).
But, in a sense, even more significant - from a breeders' perspective - is the fact that this year's Crown-Tiara Finals provided a 'double' for broodmare sire JEREMES JET via the wins of FOX DAN and BITTERSWEET. And this hot on the back of him having been the broodmare sire of Lux Aeterna in last year's Tiara.
The most successful BMSs across all 38 editions of both these 2-year-old Classics are:
ART MAJOR with 5 BMS credits (3 C + 2 F)
WINDSHIELD WIPER with 3 BMS credits (2 C + 1 F)
CLASSIC GARRY with 3 BMS (1C + 2 F)
HOLMES HANOVER with 3 BMS (1C + 2 F)
and now JEREMES JET also with 3 BMS (1C + 2 F)
Out of interest, by far the most successful distaff family in terms of the Gold Tiara has been N2 (tracing to Bessie B) thanks to wins by Full of Cheek (1994), Sheza Fake (1997), The Kindly One (1999), Lombo La Fe Fe (2002) and Distant Memory (2013).
In respect of the boys, only one family - namely A6 - has racked up three winners, through the deeds of Royal Chef (1993), Emjayem Grand (2008), and Chariot King (2009), with the last two, of course, being half brothers being out of QUEEN XENA.
The only other mares to have thrown multiple winners, in either the Gold Crown, Gold Tiara, or both, were:
BENELISE - with Yrubla in 2007, and Soho Valencia in 2011 in the Crown
and
QUEEN OF POP thanks to Just Hope in the 2021 Tiara, and Chart Topper in the 2023 Crown.
And who is to say that CAPTAINTREACHEROUS' recent dominance of this 2-year-old Series won't continue next year - or that JEREMES JET shan't put his hand up to claim yet another broodmare sire's credit? Not us ...
