A big shout-out to the dynamic Australian duo of Todd McCarthy and Noel Daley, for taking out today's North American Cup in Ontario CA, with the Downbytheseaside entire PEBBLE BEACH. After reaching the top at the halfway point, Pebble Beach never looked like relinquishing the race, and came away to win by 3 lengths from Beach Glass in 1:50.0 dead.

Of particular significance is the domination of the Somebeachsomewhere bloodline in the field that lined up for this final.  Of the 10 finalists, more than 50% feature SBSW blood:  two having been sired by the champion himself [Beach Glass and Frozen Hanover], three having been sired by sons of SBSW in the shape of Downbytheseaside [Pebble Beach] and Captaintreacherous [I Did It Myway and Ario Hanover], whilst another has SBSW as his broodmare sire [Night Hawk].  Whilst on the subject of damsires, the honours in the final were shared between Bettors Delight and Western Terror - with two each.

But here's a question worth pondering:

will Australian breeders ever have the opportunity to tap into the siring potential of either Pebble Beach or Beach Glass - who not only finished one-two in the final, but also were victorious in their respective heat Elimininations just a week earlier?

Traditionally, winners of the North America Cup have stood at stud Downunder - with recent examples being:

Tall Dark Stranger / Captain Crunch / Lather Up / Fear The Dragon / Betting Line / Captaintreacherous / Sportswriter / Well Said ... the list goes on and on.

But all of that is thrown into jeopardy going forward ... as it will come down to whether HRA's Tax --  as is to be added to their Service Fee (they being shuttle, or frozen semen, stallions obviously) -- will put them out of the reach of many, many breeders.

Such is the damage that such discriminatory policy, in terms of breeding options, may well visit on the future bloodlines in this part of the world.
