BITTERSWEET's stunning performance in the GOLD TIARA last Saturday evening (30/03/24), made it three on the trot for sire CAPTAINTREACHEROUS ... following on from Jewel Melody's win in 2022, and Lux Aeterna in 2023. Never before have we seen a sire dominate this 2-year-old iFllies Classic in such a manner! HRNZ's recent Annual General Meeting (Saturday 14 October) unanimously adopted a resolution that will see the introduction of new Regional and National Consultation Forums - together with a new, merit- and skills-based appointment process for the selection of the HRNZ Directors. These ground-breaking changes were moved by the NZ Standardbred Breeders Association, and seconded by Rangiora Harness Racing on behalf of the Harness Racing Governance Working Group 'Change' is afoot in New Zealand - 28th October 2023

Not only did he sire three of the ten qualifiers for this prestigious event - in ITS MY SHOW, CONFEDERATE, and AMMO - but he delivered the race quinella thanks to Its My Show finishing a head to the good of the fast-finishing Confederate. Today (March 29, 2023) the Minister for Racing in Tasmania (Ms Madeleine Ogilvie) announced that Mr Ray Murrihy shall chair an independent review into Integrity, and Animal Welfare, within the Tasmanian Harness Racing Industry - which is certainly a welcome step in the right direction. But, we ask, why did it necessitate an ABC Television exposé to bring about this inquiry, when the dogs have been barking for months about the parlous state of affairs in Tasmania? Harness Racing NSW sagely wrote in their 2021/22 Season "Breeding Report": "The effects of the continual decreases in live foals will most likely take five (5) to seven (7) years to be realised in the horse population, however if foal numbers continue to drop then the current number of meetings and races in NSW may not be able to be maintained". Well, what are they going to do about a further year-on-year decline in foal numbers OF UP TO 30% come this time next year? Happy New Year - NOT ! - 5th January 2023
